West Haven mayor gives update on 'unsettling' Christmas Day cyber hack

“On Christmas Day 2024, West Haven's mayor got a call that there was a detection alert and a breach was happening. The IT director was alerted to it and they chose to take the systems down.“

“The mayor then provided an update on the "unsettling" breach, following up on the announcement from the town on social media over the weekend. In that announcement city officials said they were looking into a "security incident" that caused a virtual system shutdown.“

“Early in January, the forensic team city officials brought in to City Hall was still continuing its work.“

Connecticut city of West Haven assessing impact of cyberattack

“The attack was claimed by the Qilin ransomware group on January 11. The group drew international outrage last summer after it disrupted healthcare across London by attacking blood testing giant Synnovis. “

“The city is still assessing what data might have been affected by the incident, the update said. “

“The attack on West Haven comes as several U.S. municipalities report holiday cyber incidents. Elsewhere in New England, the Massachusetts town of Bourne reported on January 11 that its IT network had been compromised. “
