Cyber security breach costs town $24,000

“A cyber security breach occurred because the cyber thief sent the town a bogus invoice using the email of a regular vendor of the town's, Town Manager Scott Pickup told the Rockingham Select Board last week. “

“Pickup said that two ACH (Automated Clearing House) transfers were involved, totaling just under $24,000. “

“He said the town's cyber consultant had traced the transaction to a computer server in Iceland. “

“Rick Cowan, chairman of the Rockingham Select Board, said Friday that he understood that the cyber thief somehow accessed information from Stone Environmental, which is the town's environmental consultant on the Bellows Falls train station project. “
