“Two separate cyberattacks in recent months continue to wreak havoc in Stowe’s town hall. Nearly 400 people will be offered a free year of credit monitoring services after they were identified as possibly having personal information compromised last summer when a hacker used the town's finance director email account to send out spoof emails. “
“The email hack in the town finance department was first reported in September when the Stowe Reporter received a suspicious-looking email purportedly from the director, called them to verify it and learned it was bogus. At the time, only one email account had shown suspicious activity. After an investigation, it turned out there were five emails “involved with exposure to the scheme, the director said. They also said this week that meant four people had fallen for the scheme in the email from them asking for their credentials. “
“In the months between September and February, investigators began with a list of 1,089 names that had potentially received bogus emails linked to accounts affected by the Aug. 30 phishing attempt. “
“Fuller said the costs of the investigations and data mining are being covered by the town’s cybersecurity insurance policy through the Vermont League of Cities and Towns. “
