County recorder's computers down after possible vendor cyberattack

“County officials are looking into why the Lorain County Recorder's Office's computers have been down since Tuesday after a vendor's computers were affected by a possible cyberattack. “

“Recorder Mike Doran said the issue was noticed on Tuesday and is the result of a county records management vendor called Cott Systems suffering a computer outage earlier this week. “

“"Our vendor is currently experiencing technical difficulties with our record search system. They are working as quickly as possible to resolve this issue. We apologize for the inconvenience and will update this message as soon as the system is back up," the message reads. “

“The incident is being investigated by the FBI and Homeland Security in other states as a possible cyberattack, according to multiple media reports. The city of Farmington, Connecticut; Onondoga County (New York) Clerk of Courts office; Halifax County (North Carolina) Register of Deeds; and Florence County (South Carolina) Register of Deeds all reported their systems were affected in the past few days, according to online media reports. In a statement posted by multiple county officials whose offices were affected on or in the days after Christmas, Cott wrote its customers that it was working with outside cybersecurity firms to figure out how "potentially malicious files got to our infrastructure Christmas Day/night and we continue to work on fully containing them." It is the second time in three years that the county recorder's computer systems have been affected in such a way“
