“Trumbull County Auditor Martha Yoder said a turned-off security feature led to a hack of Bazetta Township, resulting in more than $100,000 in tax dollars being transferred to a fraudulent bank account.“
“Yoder said the township fiscal officer’s Microsoft Office 365 account was hacked and the emails received by the county informing the office of a change in banks were sent from the fiscal officer’s email address. “
“According to a report from the sheriff’s office, Bazetta’s fiscal officer reported on September 3 that the township had been waiting on transactions from the county auditor’s office and had not received it. “
“In a press release, Yoder said the township fiscal officer admitted to asking for the multifactor authentication (MFA) to be turned off for the email account. MFA is an electronic authentication security method that allows access to an application only after a user successfully presents two or more pieces of evidence to authenticate identity.“
