City of Columbus blames 'cybersecurity incident,' not CrowdStrike, for ongoing tech problems

“The city of Columbus is investigating a cybersecurity incident that its officials say is unrelated to Friday's CrowdStrike global systems outage that affected airlines and many other businesses, government operations, and the public. “

“Mayor Andrew J. Ginther said in a media release Monday that the city's Department of Technology thinks the cause of the city's cybersecurity problems may have stemmed from a city employee opening a malicious email. “

“The release states that on Thursday, the Department of Technology discovered "evidence of an abnormality" in its system that was unrelated to the CrowdStrike global outage. The department took "swift action" to contain and limit the exposure, the release states, including severing internet connectivity in order to protect data from being exposed. “

“The release states that the city's proactive response led to the disruption of information technology services used by Columbus employees and residents, and that it will take time to restore everything to full capacity. No timeframe was given, however. “
