Asheville City Schools may be affected by major, global breach of student and staff data

“A major data breach of teachers' and students' personal information in December may impact Asheville City Schools and other public schools across the state, according to a Jan. 9 letter to ACS parents and staff.“

“Using a contract employee's credentials, a hacker breached the data of the PowerSchool information system that North Carolina public schools use to track real-time student data, grades, attendance, transcripts and more, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. “

“"A PowerSchool-contracted employee's credentials were compromised via malware. This allowed unauthorized access by the threat actors," NCDPI said in message to Asheville City Schools.“
