Minneapolis Public Schools confirms cyber-attack, urges password changes

“Minneapolis Public Schools has confirmed it was the victim of a cyber-attack last month, and has urged staff, students and parents to change their passwords and monitor their financial accounts for possible fraud. “

“In an email to families and students, Minneapolis Public Schools described the technical issues as an “encryption event.” “

“On Feb. 20, the district says its network was infected with an encryption virus that was caused by a "threat actor" who gained access within the system. “

“Students were asked to change passwords on MPS devices when they returned to school following the cyberattack. Parents were sent emails late Monday stating parent/teacher conferences would be canceled Tuesday, Feb. 21, due to "technical difficulties" impacting its systems. This prompted many parents to take to social media to express their concern, since the district wasn't providing further details at the time. “

Medusa claims responsibility for Minneapolis Public Schools’ “encryption event,” provides proof of how much data they accessed

“The Medusa ransomware gang has claimed responsibility for the attack on MPS. And not only have they claimed responsibility, they have already leaked a significant amount of proof of claims — proof that includes employee information and student information. “

“The threat actors seem to be demanding $1 million dollars for them to delete all the data or sell it to any interested buyer. The amount of work they have put into packaging these data is significant — including a .mp4 file that shows file trees and the contents of numerous files. “
