“A new report on Niles’ ongoing efforts to restore village computer systems calls the security breach that occurred in June a “ransomware attack.” “
“On June 10, the ransomware attack impacted Niles’ computer data and telephone systems that operate over a voice-over-internet protocol. The report says 36 village systems were impacted by the attack, including 17 directly impacting the public and 19 indirectly impacting the public. “
“As of Oct. 3, the report said 20 systems had been restored, eight had “workarounds” in place, while work to restore eight other systems remained “in progress.” “
“So far, the village has incurred $398,203 in bills for restoration and a forensic investigation of the attack, including $148,411 billed and paid so far by insurance, along with $249,792 in additional services billed to the village for first-phase efforts and submitted to insurance for reimbursement, which is pending. “
