“Pompano Beach officials are warning residents about a cybersecurity incident involving CodeRED, the third-party emergency alert system used by the city, after learning that a dataset tied to user accounts may have been accessed by an unauthorized party.“
“City officials said the potentially affected information includes names, addresses, email addresses and phone numbers submitted by residents who signed up for CodeRED alerts. For users who created optional CodeRED profiles, stored passwords may also have been involved. Many users, however, never created a password because the system did not require one to receive alerts. “
“The city emphasized that there is no indication the data has been publicly posted online, but said it was notifying residents out of caution so they can take steps to protect themselves. Cybersecurity experts say incidents involving contact information often lead to phishing attempts or scam calls rather than identity theft, and the primary risk is highest for people who reused the same password on multiple accounts. “
