San Benito County recovers nearly $700K after email phishing scam diverts payment

“San Benito County is investigating a fraudulent transaction involving nearly $700,000 of county funds, which officials say was part of an email phishing scam.“

“This incident comes just weeks after another financial scandal involving the county library. “

“The San Benito County Sheriff's Office said the payment was part of an email phishing scam, where someone posed as a construction contractor and managed to slip in falsified details through a vendor change request, sending county money to the wrong place. “
