Mobile County Health Department reveals potential data breach

“Some clients of the Mobile County Health Department are getting letters informing them of a potential data breach.“

“The department discovered “suspicious activity” on its network on June 6. According to letters sent to clients this month, the department found “unauthorized access” to electronic files on that day. The Health Department’s letter states that it then determined which types of protected health information might have been compromised. Those include information such as names and patient identification numbers. “

“The letter states that the department completed a cyber security review last month. Officials declined to answer questions about the incident, including why patients just now are learning of the breach or even how many people might be affected. The letter stresses that officials do not know for sure if any sensitive information was stolen. “
